2015 Great Lakes Titanic Society Picnic

GLTS picnic 1

Time for the traditional picnic group photo. In front are (L-R) Ruth, Bobbie and Mary Ann. In back are (L-R) Jim, Paul, Craig, Patrick and Bob. It was one of only two times the annual group shot had been made with a model of the Titanic.

The highlight of the 2015 picnic was the actual Titanic! (Well, a very nice model, anyway …) Patrick Gorman, who lives in Corry, Pennsylvania, attended the picnic and brought and assembled his 11-foot-long Titanic model on the beach. The model attracted a lot of attention from passersby heading down to the lake, including a man who, it turned out, is related to first-class Titanic passenger Madeline Astor’s second husband, William Dick. Here are some photos from the 2015 picnic. All were taken by Craig Sanders.

Picnic 11

The picnic attendees listen to visitor John Weiss talk about Titanic passenger Madeline Astor’s second husband, to whom his mother’s side of the family is related. Weiss and his wife happened to be passing by during their day at the beach, saw the Titanic model and stopped to chat.

John Weiss and his wife pose with the Titanic. Weiss is an artist who does many dog portraits. He’s related through his mother’s side of the family to Madeline Astor’s second husband, William Dick.

GLTS picnic 7

Brandon Colwell and his son pose with the Titanic. Colwell, a former welder and fireman in the U.S. Navy, has an interest in shipwrecks due to his hobby of diving. The two were walking along the beach when they spotted the model and stopped in to have a look-see.
